BathCamp

ideas and interesting people

I'm aware of the fact that there are (or used to be) some local gatherings of the geek variety. Does anyone go to / know of regular meet-ups in the Bath / Bristol area? If so, what, where and when...?

There have been regular (monthly) nerdy beers in Bradford for a year-and-a-bit; attendance this year has been very poor on the whole, generally just two or three people, which a nerdy night out does not make. The next one is due on November 13th. I shall ask the boageeks mailing list if they have opinions either way about joining forces with the new Bathcamp Overlords.

Thanks for this, Giles. It'd be cool if you'd see who is interested, although worth stressing that this isn't a world-domination plan (well, not much...), but rather not wanting to flood people with too many nights out...

el-pub fell quiet a while ago though it is hard to pinpoint the reason why and certainly lots of people you'd think would be interested signed up. Very few ever came out though - just the usual suspects - and it seemed some people came once and never again! I often hear people saying "I'd like to come, but not then" - Tuesdays were chosen as the night few people do anything, and yet it appears it was the very night everyone is doing something else. Sounds like the BOA group suffer similarly.

So what am I rambling towards? Dunno really. Never did. :-) Suffice to say I think there is probably still some life in el-pub, it could be merged into something else, it could probably use a lot more organisation - some folks said if they were "just going to the pub" they'd prefer to "just go to the pub" (presumably with their other friends! :-)) - so I guess it becomes more like the BathCamp in September?

I'm hopeful there will always be a group of us who go to the pub by virtue of having worked together (and that is really what el-pub became), but a semi-formal group that isn't...

Pete - I've always liked elPub just for the "turn up and have a beer" element, but it's also great knowing I can talk geek at the same time. I'm not the most regular of attendees, but I have missed having it to go to the last couple of months. It'd be nice if we could get back into it (or something!) being a regular event.

I agree that el-pub and its "have a beer" focus safe in the knowledge that you can talk geek without alienating yourself is a good thing! :-) Will try to arrange another one soon then!
